A psychiatric assessment is a meeting between a mental health professional and a person who is experiencing symptoms of a mental illness. The purpose of the assessment is to determine whether the person has a mental illness and, if so, what type of treatment would be most effective.

During the assessment, the mental health professional will ask questions about the person’s symptoms, medical history, and family history. They will also observe the person’s behavior and appearance. The assessment may also include a physical examination, lab tests, and psychological testing.

If the mental health professional determines that the person has a mental illness, they will work with the person to develop a treatment plan. The treatment plan may include medication, therapy, and other support services.

Medication management is a service provided by a mental health professional to help people who are taking psychiatric medications manage their medications. The goals of medication management are to ensure that the person is taking the right medication at the right dose and to help the person cope with any side effects they may be experiencing.

During medication management appointments, the mental health professional will review the person’s medications and make sure they are taking them as prescribed. They will also assess the person’s symptoms and side effects, and make any necessary adjustments to the medication regimen.

Individual psychotherapy is a type of therapy that is provided by a mental health professional to an individual. The purpose of individual psychotherapy is to help the person identify and work through the issues that are causing them distress.

During individual psychotherapy sessions, the mental health professional will ask the person questions about their symptoms, their thoughts and feelings, and their experience of the world. They will help the person to understand their symptoms and to develop coping skills to deal with their distress.

What are the Types of Psychotherapy?

DBT: Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a specific type of Cognitive behavior psychotherapy that focuses on teaching skills to regulate emotions to improve one’s quality of life and functioning.

TF-CBT: Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is time-sensitive psychotherapy specifically for children and adolescents suffering from symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  TF-CBT will teach skills to cope with trauma, regulate emotions and modify unhealthy thinking patterns and behaviors.

CPT: Cognitive Processing Therapy is psychotherapy for adults that have experienced trauma and struggle with symptoms of PTSD. CPT will teach skills to cope, regulate emotions and modify unhealthy thinking patterns and behaviors to improve quality of life and functioning.

ERT: Emotion Regulation Therapy is Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT) is a type of psychotherapy that helps individuals to manage their emotions more effectively. ERT is based on the idea that many mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and borderline personality disorder, are linked to difficulties in regulating emotions. The therapy is designed to help clients identify and change maladaptive patterns of emotional response, and to develop more effective coping strategies. ERT typically involves a combination of cognitive-behavioral techniques, mindfulness practices, and emotion-focused interventions. The ultimate goal of ERT is to help clients achieve greater emotional stability, resilience, and overall well-being.

Motivational interviewing is a counseling method that helps people resolve ambivalent feelings and insecurities to find the internal motivation they need to change their behavior.

Holistic Therapy: Treatment that focuses on the whole person, taking into account all aspects of their health – physical, mental, social, etc.
It’s about all the ways in which people interact with their world and their overall sense of being. Clients are guided toward self-awareness and then allowed to lead their own journey through self-discovery and healing.

Treating depression safely, without medication.

Drug-free Depression Treatment That Works For You

TMS is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy, a non-drug treatment for major depression. TMS uses focused magnetic pulses, similar to an MRI, to reignite dormant synapses in the brain and help your brain function the way it was meant to.

Family and couples counseling is a type of therapy that is provided by a mental health professional to a family or couple. The purpose of family and couples counseling is to help the family or couple identify and work through the issues that are causing them distress.

During family and couples counseling sessions, the mental health professional will ask the family or couple questions about their symptoms, their thoughts and feelings, and their experience of the world. They will help the family or couple to understand their symptoms and to develop coping skills to deal with their distress.

Comprehensive addiction services are a type of treatment that is provided by a mental health professional to people who are struggling with addiction. The goals of comprehensive addiction services are to help the person overcome their addiction and to develop coping skills to prevent relapse.

During comprehensive addiction treatment, the mental health professional will work with the person to develop a treatment plan. The treatment plan may include detoxification, medication, therapy, and other support services.

NICOTINE DEPENDENCE: Specialized treatment designed to help individuals quit using nicotine products such as cigarettes, cigars, vapes, hookah or chewing tobacco.

Case management services are a type of service provided by a mental health professional to people who have mental illnesses. The goal of case management services is to help the person connect with the resources they need to manage their mental illness.

During case management appointments, the mental health professional will assess the person’s needs and make referrals to appropriate resources. They will also provide support and guidance to the person as they navigate the mental health system.

The main goal of therapists who use dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is to strike a balance between validation (acceptance) of who you are and your challenges and the benefits of change. It will help you learn new skills to improve emotion regulation in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.

Goals for individual DBT therapy sessions are the following:

  • To help keep you safe by reducing suicidal and self-harming behaviors, if applicable.
  • To limit behaviors that get in the way of productive therapy.
  • To help you reach your goals and improve your quality of life by addressing what’s blocking your progress, such as mental health conditions or relationship issues.
  • To help you learn new skills to replace unhelpful behaviors.

DBT skills I use to help enhance your capabilities in day-to-day life. The four DBT skills taught will include:

  • Mindfulness: This is the practice of being fully aware and focused in the present instead of worrying about the past or future.
  • Distress tolerance: This involves understanding and managing your emotions in difficult or stressful situations without responding with harmful behaviors.
  • Interpersonal effectiveness: This means understanding how to ask for what you want and need and setting boundaries while maintaining respect for yourself and others.
  • Emotion regulation: This means understanding, being more aware of and having more control over your emotions.
