What Is Kratom?
Kratom is a plant native to Southeast Asia, often sold in the U.S. as an herbal supplement. Despite its legal status, kratom is not FDA-approved and carries serious health risks. Its active compounds—mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7HO)—affect the brain similarly to opioids, making kratom both physically and psychologically addictive.
Users often report:
- Increased energy or alertness
- Sedative-like effects such as relaxation and pain relief
- Confusion or disorientation
- Withdrawal symptoms that some describe as more intense than heroin withdrawal

“The withdrawal symptoms I experienced were worse than withdrawing from heroin.”

Why Kratom Dependence Is Serious
Although it’s marketed as a natural herbal remedy, kratom can be dangerously addictive. Its active compounds interact with opioid receptors in the brain, putting users at real risk for dependence and serious side effects.
